PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator)
PSA is the gold standard of card grading and commands the highest market premiums. A PSA 10 will almost always sell for more than a BGS 9.5 or CGC 10 of the same card. Their grading scale runs 1-10 with no sub-grades — you get a single number.
Best for: Cards you plan to sell. The PSA label is the most recognized and trusted in the market, especially for high-value vintage cards and modern chase cards.
Drawback: No sub-grades means you don't know exactly where the card fell short. A PSA 9 could have one weak corner or slightly off centering — you'll never know which.
BGS (Beckett Grading Services)
BGS provides the most detailed grading with four sub-grades: Centering, Corners, Edges, and Surface. Each sub-grade is scored individually, and the overall grade is a weighted average. Their coveted "Black Label" (all four sub-grades at 10) is the holy grail for collectors.
Best for: Collectors who want to understand exactly what condition their card is in. The sub-grade breakdown is invaluable for learning and for cards you're keeping in your personal collection.
Drawback: BGS 10 commands a lower market premium than PSA 10 for most cards. Turnaround times can be very long.
CGC (Certified Guaranty Company)
CGC entered the trading card market after establishing itself in comic book grading. They offer sub-grades like BGS at generally lower prices and faster turnaround. Their market acceptance has continued to grow through 2025-2026.
Best for: Budget-conscious collectors who still want detailed sub-grades and professional encapsulation. Also great for Pokémon cards where CGC acceptance is strong.
Drawback: CGC graded cards still sell for less than PSA equivalents in most cases, though the gap is narrowing.
