Card Centering Guide: How to Check Before You Submit
Centering kills more PSA 10 dreams than any other factor. Here's how to check it yourself.

What Is Centering?
Centering measures how evenly the printed card image sits within the card's borders. A perfectly centered card has equal border width on all four sides. When the image is shifted even slightly, the borders become uneven — left/right or top/bottom — and graders notice.
The Centering Scale
Centering is expressed as a ratio comparing opposite borders. 50/50 is perfect. Here's what each major grading service requires:
💡 Key insight: PSA's centering standards are per axis. A card needs to pass both left-right AND top-bottom centering independently. You can have perfect left-right centering but fail on top-bottom — and that alone can drop you from a 10 to a 9.
How to Measure Centering at Home
Method 1: The Eye Test (Quick)
Hold the card at arm's length and compare opposite borders. If they look obviously uneven, it's probably 65/35 or worse. This is enough to filter out cards that won't get a 10.
Method 2: The Ruler Method (Precise)
- Measure the left border width in millimeters
- Measure the right border width
- Calculate: smaller / (smaller + larger) × 100
- Result is the first number in your ratio (e.g., 47 means 47/53)
- Repeat for top/bottom

Common Centering Pitfalls
âš ï¸ Borderless cards — Many modern cards have minimal borders. These are graded more leniently for centering.
âš ï¸ Full art cards — Centering is measured by the cut, not the artwork. The card edge itself must be evenly cut.
âš ï¸ Back centering matters too — A perfectly centered front with a badly off-center back will still lose points.
âš ï¸ Pack-fresh isn't always centered — Factory cutting varies. Many cards come off the line at 55/45 or worse.
